Explorer Young Leaders – Make a Difference, Build Your Future

Are you aged 14–18 and looking to take your Scouting journey to the next level? Or maybe you’re working towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award and want to make your volunteering hours count in a fun, meaningful way?

Welcome to the Explorer Young Leader Unit!

The Explorer Young Leader (YL) Scheme is a unique opportunity for young people to step up, take charge, and inspire the next generation of Scouts. As a Young Leader, you’ll volunteer alongside adult leaders in Squirrel Dreys, Beaver Colonies, Cub Packs, or Scout Troops – helping to run games, activities, and even shape the programme.

It’s not just about lending a hand – it’s about growing your skills, gaining confidence, and having a blast while doing it.

Why join?

  • Earn volunteering hours for your DofE, school, or college
  • Gain leadership experience and valuable life skills
  • Work towards Top Awards like the Young Leader Belt
  • Get involved in training, camps, social events, and fun challenges
  • Make friends and memories while making a real impact

What do you do as a Young Leader?

You’ll take part in a fun and flexible training programme, covering everything from communication and behaviour management to leadership styles and programme planning. There are 11 modules and 4 missions, and you’ll be supported all the way through by our district team.

Whether you’re already an Explorer Scout or brand new to Scouting – this is your chance to lead, learn, and grow.
