King Alfred District Camp 2022

Over the weekend 16th – 18th September, 98 Scouts from across the District converged on a huge, splendid and scenic farm field at Longcot for this year’s District Patrol Camp.  Supported by a large team of Leaders, Explorer Scouts and parentstheweekend was filled with a busy programme of adventurous and skill-based activities ranging from go-karts and a climbing tower to circus skills and glass engraving, from cooking on wood fires and pioneering to archery and air rifles – and more.  Plus of course camping in Patrol tents, traditional and ‘modern’.  Also, some of the Leaders were able to update their training records during informal tutoring sessions with the District training team.

Sadly, the weekend was an emotional one, being so soon after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had passed away.  In keeping with the need to respect the occasion and atmosphere, the Friday flag ceremony reflected her dedication and support to Scouting and the whole Nation over 70 years, concluding with the playing of the Last Post.  On Saturday, Scouts wrote tributes and prayers which were read out in the evening, and on Sunday, the Scouts Own service was dedicated to our new King Charles III, again with prayers, readings and good wishes.

The weather? Well, Longcot was the coldest place in Great Britain overnight on Saturday and Sunday, but everyone survived, and at least it was warm and sunny during the day.

Overall a really successful and respectful event.  Thanks to the farmer for the use of his field and everyone else who helped organise, support and feed the Camp.  So, how about the next DPC in 2023.  Any volunteers?
